all aspects

The Star forces you to be at the top of your game in all aspects. You need to be physically in shape, tactically sharp and knowledgeable with rig tune and sail shape. Around the corners you are very busy also. For instance coming into a leeward mark you have to think of the upwind tactics, put yourself in a good position coming out of the mark, trim in 90′ of mainsheet, pull on the outhaul, jib cars, main Cunningham pull the slack out of the jib sheet when the pole comes down plus not hit any boats around you. The crew is just as busy trying to keep the rig up while taking the pole down and dropping the jib halyard, pulling down the jib tack, pulling back the shroud cars, pulling the running backstays on and easing off the mast bender!

California crew safely medevaced – 23 March 2010 Following the incident which took place on Sunday afternoon GMT in which the California entry in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race was rolled in a fierce Pacific storm, the Danish registered tanker, Nord Nightingale, is now at the scene. The 180-metre tanker was on passage from Yokohama to Los Angeles and diverted by US Coastguard last night. It’s a standard rule of the sea that vessels divert when another is in distress and the intention was to transfer injured crew member Clive Cockram on board. Clive was sitting in the saloon when the boat rolled and was thrown across the cabin, ending up with cuts to his head. He responded well to treatment but it is prudent to ensure that he swiftly gets the best medical care. After several attempts, Clive was safely transferred and the launch was recovered to the merchant vessel. thx Lutz

The skipper Franck Cammas, navigator Stan Honey, watch leaders Fred Le Peutrec and Steve Ravussin, helmsmen/trimmers Loïc Le Mignon, Thomas Coville and Lionel Lemonchois, and the three bowmen Bruno Jeanjean, Ronan Le Goff and Jacques Caraës, supported on shore by router Sylvain Mondon, have pulled it off: they have beaten the round the world record under sail via the three capes!

Tempo allegro

The acceleration is good for this final sprint thanks to a NW’ly wind of around twenty knots and the finish off the Créac’h lighthouse is scheduled during the course of tonight. [Franck Cammas]
